Michael Dell bought out his computer company in 2013, and made a deal to buy data storage firm EMC for $67B in October. Dell was started in his Texas dorm in 1984 with just $1k. When he went public four years later, it was worth $85M, and by the time he went private again it was worth $25B.
He keeps most of his money in his private investment firm MSD Capital, which has a real estate investment arm. In addition, the firm invests in Asbury Automotive, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein parent company PVH Corp and DineEquity, which operates IHOP and Applebee's. He also owns an 18.5k SF, seven-bedroom/nine-and-a-half bath Hawaiian estate estimated to be worth more than $70M.
