This gave him the capital to eventually found Topa Properties in 1980, which quickly gained a real estate empire of high-rise office buildings in Los Angeles, Ventura County, and Honolulu, and even property in the US Virgin Islands. At the time of death in 2011, John’s portfolio included 4M SF of commercial property and 4,500 residential units.
He also founded the Silver Star new car dealership group in Thousand Oaks, selling Mercedes, Cadillacs, Jaguars and Ranger Rovers. After John’s death, his wife Marion now chairs LA-based Topa Equities, which oversees John’s various businesses. His two children also have management roles in the firm.
