Owner of the Denver Broncos since 1984, Pat Bowlen made his fortune first as a lawyer in Canada, and then through his family’s oil drilling business, Regent Resources. His holdings in Edmonton included oil fields, mines and real estate.
After the Broncos won Super Bowl 50 in 2017, the team's general manager and former quarterback, John Elway, hoisted the Lombardi Trophy and proclaimed, “this one’s for Pat” — a reference to Bowlen, who dedicated the team’s Super Bowl XXXII victory to Elway 17 years earlier. In 2014, Bowlen stepped down as CEO of the Broncos due to progressively worsening Alzheimer’s disease. — Scott Klocksin
