Russian-born Sergey Brin and Larry Page created Google following a research project at Stanford University in 1998. The name Google was based on a mathematical term, googol, which stands for the number one followed by 100 zeros, to illustrate the plethora of information available on the internet. Now, Brin is considered the richest immigrant in America.
Brin provided funding for Passerelle Investment Co., now called Los Altos Community Investments, which acquires retail space and offers below-market rent to stores that cater to families. His ex-wife, Ann Wojcicki, oversees operations of this organization. — Julie Littman
