Country Garden Holdings majority owner Yang Huiyan at her 2008 wedding
Daughter of farmer-turned-developer Yang Guoqiang, Yang Huiyan became the richest person on the Chinese mainland when her father transferred 70% of Country Garden Holdings’ shares to her before the company went public in 2007.
Yang was only 26 when she became the controlling shareholder of the development company, which generated $23B in revenue last year.
Country Garden recently partnered with the Malaysian government on Forest City, a $36B residential project near the border of Malaysia and Singapore. As the vice chairman of the board’s governance committee, Yang helped raise $410M selling shares in 2014. She also owns a 93% stake in Bright Scholar Education, an international school in China backed by Country Garden. — Travis Gonzalez
