Identical twin brothers Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay built their empire in the media, shipping and retail industries. Their media interests have included The Scotsman, Sunday Business and Telegraph Media Group.
The two are big buyers of luxury hotels and bought the famous London Ritz in 1995. They tried to take control of a £1B company that owned other five-star hotels such as Claridges in a bitter legal battle that lasted more than four years. They made money on the deal but the portfolio was ultimately sold to the Qatari government.
Since 1993, the Barclay Brothers, as they are known, have owned the island of Brecqhou, part of the Channel Islands between England and France. — Scott Klocksin
