The namesake of NYU’s Stern School of Business, Leonard Stern’s wealth has its roots in a family pet supplies business he took over in 1959. He rapidly expanded the business before selling it for $350M in 2000.
His Hartz Mountain Industry owns more than 37M SF in New York and New Jersey, as well as One Superior Place, a luxury rental tower in Chicago.
Stern is an active philanthropist, often championing Jewish causes. The efforts he has been involved in include a 2014 comprehensive poll to measure anti-Semitism across 102 countries and territories. — Scott Klocksin
