Red Apple Group CEO John Catsimatidis might be best known by New Yorkers for his failed mayoral run in 2013. The Greek-born billionaire built much of his fortune as the owner and top executive of the grocery store chain Gristedes Foods, and has padded his wealth through enterprises like an oil refinery he owns and a collection of hundreds of gas stations.
This winter, Red Apple Group filed plans to build a 21-story mixed-use tower toward the western end of the Coney Island boardwalk in Brooklyn. In a July 2016 interview with the Commercial Observer, he said of the area, “I want to make it look like Miami Beach, and what’s wrong with that?” — Scott Klocksin
