Frank Lowy was born in 1930, in what is now Slovakia. Living in Hungary during World War II, he survived the Nazi occupation of the country in a Jewish ghetto. His father was killed by Nazis when he was 13.
Lowy arrived in Australia via Israel in 1952, and began working for a small delivery business members of his family had set up following the war. With business partner John Saunders, whom he met shortly after arriving in Australia, Lowy founded Westfield Development Corp., which opened its first shopping center in Blacktown, a Sydney suburb.
The firm now operates centers across Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the U.S. Lowy’s sons, Steven and Peter, were appointed joint CEOs of the firm in 2010. — Scott Klocksin
