Alexander Spanos became a real estate developer in 1960, after investing money earned through a catering business. The business exploded, and by 1977 A.G. Spanos Cos. was the country’s largest apartment builder. Alexander’s sons and grandsons run various parts of the family business.
After a failed attempt to buy the San Francisco 49ers years earlier, Spanos purchased a majority interest in the San Diego Chargers for $40M in 1984. His son, Dean Spanos, runs the team, now the Los Angeles Chargers, which is set to share the new stadium in Inglewood with the LA Rams. — Scott Klocksin
