The CN Tower Honoured

Toronto’s iconic CN Tower will be honoured with the 2017 Prix du XXe siècle for its significance to Canada at the RAIC/OAA Festival of Architecture in Ottawa.

Built in 1976, the tower held the title of the world's tallest freestanding structure for more than 30 years at a height of 553 metres. The festival jury called the structure “an incredible achievement of Canadian engineering and construction that pushed the boundaries of concrete technology.”

The award, presented by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and The National Trust for Canada, is aimed at promoting public awareness of important Canadian structures of the 20th century.

The festival will be held in Ottawa from May 24 through May 27. Recipients will also be acknowledged at the National Trust for Canada’s national conference and awards in Ottawa on Oct. 13.

The CN Tower joins a list of 17 iconic Canadian structures that have received the honour, including Toronto’s Massey College, the Dominion Centre, Toronto’s City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square.
