Mezli, an autonomous restaurant chain, will bring its robotic food service to Spark Social, an event space in San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood that hosts a rotating assortment of local food trucks.
Mezli was founded by three Stanford University engineering students: Alex Gruebele, Alex Kolchinski and Maxwell Perham, who wanted to make healthy food easier to access, according to a press release. The restaurant got its start at KitchenTown, a 30K SF food and technology incubator in San Mateo, California.
The new location is expected to be fully operational by the end of August or early September. Mezli uses robotics to prepare bowl-style meals, cutting overhead costs.
Restaurants and hotels in the Bay Area have increasingly implemented autonomous services in recent years.
The Ameswell Hotel in Mountain View, California, introduced Servi, a self-driving robot server, last June, according to Eater San Francisco.
However, robot-run restaurants in San Francisco have also struggled to stay powered on. Several autonomous restaurant startups have shut down or downsized in recent years, including CafeX, Zume and Eatsa.
