A small grocery store at 2268 West Pico Blvd. in Pico-Union may soon be torn down to make way for a 125-room hotel, according to a motion introduced to the LA City Council by Councilman Gil Cedillo.
The city council's Planning and Land Use Committee gave a thumbs up to the plan Tuesday. LA's zoning requirements would have to be altered to build the hotel.
The developer has not yet been named, but would bring a well-known hotel brand to the area, along with a restaurant and a meeting place on the ground floor, Curbed Los Angeles reports.
Cedillo said the site would attract visitors to the LA Convention Center and the proposed hotel would serve as a catalyst for the economic development of the surrounding commercial areas.
The immediate neighborhood primarily consists of businesses in older buildings.
