H-E-B Secures Funds From City For New Museum District Store

On Wednesday City Council approved a $13.9M plan to purchase property near the Museum District for the development of an H-E-B, the Houston Chronicle reports. The arrangement was heavily deliberated, with Mayor Sylvester Turner coming out against the project. Eventually the mayor said the project would be the best use of the resources given the fast approaching expiration of federal funds for the area.

"I'm not thrilled about it," Turner said. "It became clear that the best use, considering all these circumstances, was to move forward."

The 72K SF H-E-B would be one of the few in a lower-income, predominantly African-American neighborhood. The project has received criticism because the USDA does not consider the area a food desert.
