The Sugar Land City Council approved a preservation project for the century-old Imperial Sugar Char House, which city officials say will stabilize and protect the historic landmark and prepare it for future adaptive reuse.
The $15M project is supported by a $50M certificate of obligation to acquire and preserve the property and is funded by Sugar Land’s economic development sales tax corporations.
Planned work includes a new roof, structural repairs to exterior walls and the rear liquor gallery, steel and masonry repairs, mechanical and electrical improvements, and a historically appropriate restoration of the windows. The project will also restore and relocate the Imperial signage to reflect its historic placement.
The project will address challenges that have hindered previous redevelopment efforts, paving the way for a future development partner to bring new life to the property, Sugar Land Director of Redevelopment Devon Rodriguez said in a statement.
Urbano Architects will lead design for the project, and Bellows Construction is construction manager at risk. Construction mobilization is expected in December, and completion is estimated for March 2028.
