Texas Cafeteria closed earlier this month after half a century of slinging hash browns and beef tips for legions of hungry fans. The vacant space at 2400 N Shepherd on the western edge of the Heights was snapped up by MFT Interests.
CFO Glenn Clements Jr. originally planned just a facelift for the old cafeteria, but it morphed into a complete overhaul. Glenn tells us he’s looking for a restaurant to take about half of the 6k SF, and would like to divide the rest between two retail tenants.
The Houston Heights is one of the most active areas of town right now, with new luxury developments and lifestyle companies opening nearly weekly. It also has several microbreweries, drawing in young hipsters who enjoy the diverse options this small neighborhood provides.
Just down the street from MFT's space, construction on two new restaurants is continuing. Hunky Dory and Bernadine’s—both from the Treadsack restaurant group—will be opening in the near future, solidifying the neighborhood as a foodie destination du jour.
Glenn says the Heights is the one area where he’s not seeing slowdowns in leasing. He’s proceeding cautiously on his single-family subdivision in the Spring Branch area, for instance, but moving ahead with two different projects in the Heights.
