Google is planning to move from its office in suburban Birmingham to Downtown Detroit, according to the company. The company is looking for 35K SF.

Blocks of space of that size are a bit hard to come by in Downtown Detroit. Assuming the move takes place, it would make Google the largest tech operation in the city's urban core, Crain's Detroit Business reports.

“Google is psyched to be part of Detroit’s comeback,” Google Detroit head Danielle Russell said in a statement. “There’s so much energy in this city — so much creativity, innovation and hard work — we can’t wait to be part of the day-to-day action and to grow with Downtown Detroit.”

Google occupies about 17K SF at 114 Willits St. in Birmingham, where it has been for 10 years. The suburban office has 100 employees who focus on digital advertising for the auto industry.

Once in its new location, Google plans to expand its local workforce, though the company revealed no specific plans about how many or when that would happen. The move itself has no timetable as yet.
