Lidl's Texas Expansion Becomes Clearer

Lidl

Discount grocery Lidl is set to open its first U.S. stores this summer. Public records show several tracts of land in North Texas have been purchased or are seeking zoning to become locations for the Germany-based grocer.

Lidl has purchased land or requested zoning for sites in southwest Dallas, Frisco, McKinney, Little Elm, Rockwall, Wylie and North Richland Hills, the Dallas Morning News reports. The grocery chain has spent more than $10M acquiring sites in North Texas, and recently opened an office in Farmers Branch. A typical Lidl store is about 36K SF.

The sites include:

  • 8230 Preston Road in Frisco;

  • The northeast corner of Virginia Parkway and Custer Road in McKinney;

  • 3010 FM 544 and Regency Drive in Wylie;

  • Summit Parc Drive in Dallas;

  • The northeast corner of Goliad Street and Quail Run Road in Rockwall;

  • 9050 North Tarrant Parkway in North Richland Hills; and

  • FM 423 and Little Elm Parkway in Little Elm.

Last fall, the company confirmed that it was scouting sites in Texas, and reports indicate two Houston-area stores are also on the docket. The U.S. invasion has so far been most prevalent in Virginia, Washington, DC, and the Carolinas. Lidl plans to open 100 U.S. stores within one year.

Discount grocery competitor Aldi announced in February that it would spend $1.6B expanding and remodeling stores, including 95 in Texas, to accommodate more fresh foods.

Fung Global Retail & Technology retail analyst Deborah Weinswig forecasts Lidl's first year of U.S. sales will be $1B across 120 stores.
