A groundbreaking was recently held for a $16M mixed-use project called Mosaic Village that will feature 300 student housing units for Johnson C. Smith University, one of the oldest historically black colleges in the South. The four-story project, at West Trade Street and Bruns Avenue, also will contain 6,500 SF of ground-floor retail space and a parking deck for 350 to 400 cars. Construction should be complete by July 2012. The development also is expected to eventually include a 15k SF university bookstore and print shop, as well as renovation of the historic George E. Davis House on the JCSU campus. Davis was the first African American professor at the school when it was still known as Biddle University. (The name was changed in 1923.) The project is a JV between JCSU and long-time West Side property owner Griffin Brothers Co. A JV between Balfour Beatty Construction and Shelco is GC. Neighboring Concepts is project architect.
