Is The Pebble Mill Life Science Campus On The Brink of Completion?

Birmingham Edgebaston Pebble Mill Calthorpe Estate

Thirteen years after the BBC's Pebble Mill studios were demolished — and 15 after the BBC moved its Birmingham operation to the Mailbox —the complete redevelopment of the 27-acre Edgebaston campus is in sight.

Birmingham's Pebble Mill — famously home to Pebble Mill at One, the U.K.'s beloved but ramshackle first venture in daytime TV — has since morphed into a medical and life science campus.

Calthorpe Estates is close to deals which will secure occupiers for the remaining major plot, BQ Live reports. The prospect of new signings come as Birmingham's science sector transforms with Bruntwood's acquisition of the 80K SF Birmingham Innovation Centre amidst preparations to add another 170K SF.

At Pebble Mill's plot 4, the final available plot, strength of demand means Calthorpe will now plan for an additional 54K SF, taking the building total to 106K SF.

The deals come soon after Circle Heathcare secured permission to add a further 43K SF to its hospital development at the site, taking the total to 204K SF.

There are also plans to bring innovative proton therapy to the growing campus which was originally expected to see 300K SF of life science and medical floor space created in partnership with Birmingham City Council.

A £50M Dental Hospital and University of Birmingham's School of Dentistry opened in 2016. A 62-bed BUPA care home is opening this spring, whilst construction of Circle Health’s new hospital is due to complete late this year.
