Gap Takes Over Toys ‘R’ Us Times Square Location

The 160k SF Times Square space that used to house Toys ‘R’ Us is being converted into space for Gap and Old Navy just as the retailers’ sales are picking up.

As construction proceeds there have been some casualties. The former kid store's 65-foot-tall Ferris wheel centerpiece has been torn down, but even it had a better fate than the towering Tyrannosaurus Rex. “The dinosaur? We shredded it and burnt it to pieces,” says Marc Heiman, president of Richter+Ratner construction company, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The space in the historic Bow Tie Building appealed to Gap because it’s large enough to house both Gap and Old Navy flagships. The construction is scheduled to finish in early 2017. [WSJ]
