Is Duke Energy Planning An Office Tower In Uptown Charlotte?

An office tower might rise on part of the 2.1-acre site Duke Energy bought for $27.5M recently in Uptown Charlotte. For now, the project is called Charlotte Metro, and would be at 522 South College St., the Charlotte Business Journal reports

Plans filed with the city's planning department call for a 35-story office tower with lobby-level retail and about 1,400 underground parking spaces.

Neil Nissan, a spokesman for Duke Energy, said the company has no definitive plans for this property.

"We did not file this document," he told the Charlotte Business Journal. "We had no knowledge a third-party group was filing this document. It was done without our approval."

Duke has 5,500 employees and contractors in Uptown. Many work out of Duke Energy Center at 550 South Tryon St., while others are at 400 South Tryon and 526 South Church St., which the utility company owns. A number of others are at Duke-owned 401 South College St. and at NASCAR Plaza.
