Calthorpe Estate: 301 Years Old, So Time For A Rethink
The Calthorpe Estate has appointed Broadway Malyan to develop a new vision for the 1,536 acre central Birmingham portfolio controlled by the Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe family since 1717.
The estate, which includes most of Edgbaston along with over 3M SF of commercial floorspace including the redeveloped Pebble Mill site and the £300M New Garden Square scheme, will see more commercial use around Five Ways under the new long-term vision.
The focus on Five Ways picks up on the last big rethink in 1958, when Hagley Road and Bristol Road corridors were identified for commercial use.
Broadway Malyan will look at creating a "mixed-use business community" including the opportunities offered by medical, tourism and cultural uses and a future with residential and education at its heart.
At the 10-acre New Square Garden site the Calthorpe Estate is behind plans for 505K SF of new office floorspace and 345 apartments.
