Security Glass Key To Commercial Building Theft Prevention

Theft is a major concern for building owners of all stripes. According to the National Retail Federation, 36.5% of the nearly $50B American retailers lose annually comes from external theft.

High-end retail stores aren’t the only tenants concerned with security — people in buildings such as offices, government properties and schools must also feel secure. Existing security solutions may not be strong enough to protect against a targeted attack, but building owners sometimes wrongly believe that upgrading their security systems means sacrificing appearances.

“Commercial clients often fail to think beyond standard alarm and camera systems,” Campbell Window Film President and CEO Brad Campbell said. “Building managers are hesitant to use scissor gates or window bars, because these alter the building’s appearance and can negatively impact the property’s reputation.”

Business owners do not want to project a barricaded appearance, Campbell said, and they certainly don’t want their tenants and customers to feel as though they live in a cage, so iron bars are nonstarters.

According to the FBI, 60% of burglaries occur between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Property owners need an elegant solution that hides in plain sight even during the day.

One around-the-clock solution is reinforced Riot Glass. It does not obscure views or scare away potential customers, but it gives occupants peace of mind.

Campbell’s Riot Glass security glass and framing systems feature a thermoplastic interlayer that is invisible and undetectable. Specially made for retail outlets, such as jewelry stores and clothing retailers, and schools, the glass can either be installed over a building’s existing windows or as a replacement.

“Glass is the first line of defense against a burglary, riot or other attack,” Campbell said. “Would-be intruders attempt to break in, but are prevented from doing so by the window's strength, which in turn leaves all merchandise untouched and the store interior intact. In schools, this can save a life."
