Hines and Urban Atlantic's massive redevelopment of the 66-acre Walter Reed Army Medical Center will have 250k SF of retail anchored by a large grocer, but it will not be a Wegmans.
The Rochester-based supermarket chain had been part of Roadside Development's failed bid and was in discussions with Hines but could not reach an agreement, the Washington Business Journal reports.
The development plan still includes a large grocery anchor, and Whole Foods has its eyes on the site. In addition to the retail, Hines' Parks at Walter Reed will include 2,000 housing units, a Hyatt hotel and conference center, and offices anchored by George Washington University, MIT and bioscience/pharmaceutical companies.
Wegmans has a wildly successful store in Prince George's County, recently opened one in Alexandria and has a planned location in Tysons. A company spokesperson told Bisnow last month that the chain looks to continue its expansion in the DC region. [WBJ]
