With its only District location in Georgetown, Apple still has yet to open a store in downtown DC. That could be about to change.
The tech giant is in negotiations to open a store in the historic Carnegie Library in Mount Vernon Square, the Washington Post reports.
The 113-year-old, 63k SF building is publicly owned and has protected status, which has made it difficult to reuse. The International Spy Museum had looked to open there but had its design rejected by the Historic Preservation Review Board and decided to move to L'Enfant Plaza instead.
Apple has recently begun opening locations in historic landmarks, including New York's Grand Central Terminal, London's Regus Street and a 130-year-old bank in Paris. Officials said the Carnegie location would be similar to the flagship it opened this year in San Francisco's Union Square, which includes an outdoor plaza with seating and room for concerts. [WaPo]
