Which retailer is Canada’s largest? Revenue-wise, George Weston is the leader by “a clear margin,” according to a report yesterday from Colliers (citing 2013 Globe and Mail data). Weston generated $77.2B, including its Shoppers Drug Mart and Loblaw Cos banners. Walmart is tops among single-store brands, with $27.1B in sales across 400 stores. (Target Canada had comparatively anemic revenues of $1.3B over 13.6M SF.) Walmart (55M SF) is a front-runner on floor area, but the report notes Weston, thanks to Shoppers, has 66.4M SF. “Westons trump the Waltons in this category too.”
Apple's the runaway champ when it comes to sales productivity. It operates 29 stores nationwide, occupying a mere 203k SF, but posted sales of $1.47B in 2013, an average sales productivity rate of $7,200/SF. “Expect these numbers to rise even higher once the Apple Watch is sold through stores and not just online,” Colliers notes. Speaking of online, Amazon is Canada’s biggest retailer in cyberspace, with $2B in sales in 2014, though Walmart's making a push, with over $1B in online sales, which Colliers says are growing at an average of 165% per year.
