AEG May Build An 18,000-Seat Sports And Entertainment Arena In Downtown San Diego

If OliverMcMillan's proposal for an Embarcadero District is selected to redevelop Seaport Village, AEG will build an 18-seat arena there.

The San Diego Unified Port District is expected to provide its analysis of the six redevelopment proposals for Seaport Village, then announce the winning redevelopment plan. If the port board picks OliverMcMillan’s $1.4B proposal for a 2.4M SF Embarcadero District, the city will get a privately funded, 18,000-seat sports and entertainment arena in the bargain.

LA-based live entertainment giant AEG Worldwide, which developed Staples Center in Downtown LA, has partnered with OliverMcMillan on the proposed arena, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune. The proposal includes three hotels with 1,700 rooms; up to 325k SF of shops and restaurants; 125k SF of “blue tech” and creative office space; a 10k SF learning center and tide pools for Scripps Institution of Oceanography; and a 2k SF performance space for the San Diego Symphony.

OliverMcMillan’s overall development plan resembles LA’s Entertainment District, which includes AEG’s LA Live dining and entertainment complex, Staples Center and the LA Convention Center, all of which are surrounded by hotels—Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott, Marriott Courtyard and Residence Inn, and Luxe City Center Hotel. A Downtown SD arena is likely to attract top musical acts that now bypass the city due to the lack of a well-located performance facility. [SDUT]
