Chargers Moving Team Headquarters To Santa Ana

While the Chargers will stay in San Diego for the 2016 season and maybe beyond, according to Chargers' chairman Dean Spanos, the team plans to move its practice field and team headquarters to Santa Ana.

Earlier this month NFL owners voted to give the Chargers the option of relocating to the Rams’ planned $2.66B stadium in Inglewood or staying in SD, but the Chargers have until Jan. 15, 2017, to decide. Spanos has announced he's working with SD city fathers and the business community to resolve the stadium dilemma. If they decide to stay put, the Oakland Raiders would be given the option to move to LA.

The Chargers last week submitted grading and landscape plans to the City of Santa Ana for a five-acre parcel owned by C.J. Segerstrom & Sons, at the intersection of Susan Street and Lake Center Drive. The plan calls for two football fields and other facilities on a vacant site across the street from a former United HealthCare office building, which will become the new team headquarters.

While NFL officials are encouraging the Chargers to move to Inglewood, the team is exploring options for building a stadium of its own in San Diego. San Diego officials are considering a combined stadium and convention center complex on the downtown waterfront, according to the Orange County Register. The year-long decision period provides time for official to complete an EIR and garner support for a November ballot initiative to provide public funding for the project. Unfortunately, the November ballot includes a number of other taxing initiatives, which could diminish the stadium’s chances for voter approval. The NFL has offered $300M toward a new stadium. [OCR]
