| Tuesday’s earthquake may have been unexpected, but NYC’s buildings were locked and loaded. Only minutes afterward,BOMA/NY blasted out alerts from the NYC Office of Emergency Management and the Office of the Mayor, and building teams sprung into action with emergency action plans, now required by Local Law 26. It's a lesson learned post-9/11: have detailed procedures for building staff and tenants to take on a wide range of emergencies, according to BOMA/NY, and allow on-site building teams to make discretionary decisions based on individual situations. So for the earthquake, some sheltered in place, while others determined no physical action was necessary. What’s key in an emergency: for tenants to know the plan, take it seriously, and follow procedures that they practiced during drills and any instructions received that day, says Brookfield Office Properties’Edward Fallon, BOMA/NY’s prez.
