A Rendering Of The Renovated Plaza At 1221 Sixth Ave. In Midtown Manhattan

The plaza in front of 1221 Sixth Ave., across the street from Rockefeller Plaza and one of the several Midtown skyscrapers undergoing a major renovation, is getting a facelift of its own.

The Rockefeller Group announced that it will rebuild the plaza to be at street level with a large, circular cutout to let natural light into two below-grade retail floors totaling 35K SF. Italian architect Citterio-Viel & Partners is heading up design, the New York Post reports.

The plaza renovation is expected to cost in the mid- to high eight digits, Rockefeller Group Senior Vice President Bill Edwards told the Post, and construction will begin once an anchor tenant for the retail portion is found. Rockefeller has retained Mitch Friedel of Newmark Knight Frank to market the space, and Edwards told the Post he expects the work to be completed in 2019.

The plaza at 1221 Sixth Ave. has not been updated since it debuted in 1969. Major League Baseball has signed a lease beginning in 2019 at the Rockefeller Group's nearby office building at 1271 Sixth Ave., part of which includes the rights to produce public events in the plaza. Deloitte signed a 98K SF lease at 1221 Sixth this spring.

CORRECTION, NOV. 7, 10:45 P.M. ET: The plaza being renovated is in front of 1221 Sixth Ave., an office tower across the street from Rockefeller Center. A previous version of this story misstated which Midtown plaza was undergoing renovations. This story has been updated.
