RETAIL MADNESS

How do you get 200 real estate executives out during the Sweet Sixteen? Mix business with March Madness. We joined The Retail Network for a basketball-themed shindig last Thursday at Long Island’s Carlyle at The Palace, where we snapped Kimco Realty Corp's Josh Weinkranz, TRN founder Jay Siano, Quick Check'sBob Vallario, and Bohler Engineering’s Joe Deal. Quick Check, which owns 126 convenience stores in Northern and Central Jersey and the Hudson Valley, is looking to establish a presence in Long Island, Bob tells us, and TRN prez Joe is managing site development work for the retailer. (Fun fact: Quick Check's been around since 1888, when Durling Farms sold dairy products door-to-door. The service turned into a convenience store format in the '60s.) Jay, who's working with Quick Chek on its site selection, tells us he recently decided to go out on his own to pursue new opportunities.
Amato & Associates Insurance Agency’s Jennifer Amato, Sholom & Zuckerbrot’s Doug Weinstein, and Realty Insight Group’s Rachel Butiu. Jennifer and Doug are working together on Harbor Freight’s local expansion (its first store opened in Hempstead and one’s under construction in Bay Shore). Doug’s also working with Josh Weinkranz on several other deals across the NY metro, including Harbor Freight, Men’s Wearhouse Tux, and Party City. Josh reports that he continues to see positive leasing and deal activity, particularly in better-located assets—both local and national retailers are more focused than ever on locking up space before someone else takes it.
The Fagen Group’s Stu Fagen and Rosenbaum Consulting’s Lee Rosenbaum have a ball with TRN cheerleaders Stephanie Dininoand Jenna Russo at the event’s Pop-A-Shot contest. So which retailers are scoring these days? Small stores and restaurants, says Stu, who’s seeing call volumes go up in shopping centers he reps. To hear more about what’s going on the local and national retail scenes, join us and The Retail Network tomorrow morning at 1095 Sixth Avenue for Bisnow’s NY Retail Summit. Sign up here!
