BUILDING A BETTER NY

At the New York Building Congress' 89th Leadership Awards Luncheon at the Hilton yesterday, we were in good company. About 1,000 building and design pros showed to honor Rubenstein Associates president Howard Rubenstein, CUNY chancellor Matthew Goldstein, and The Durst Org. chairman Douglas Durst.
Tishman Construction chair Daniel Tishman (left) said although the industry isn't what it once was, he's still grateful to work in such a remarkable city that has rebounded more than expected. Laying the groundwork for the future takes wisdom and fortitude in times like these, he added. Daniel and Rudin Management Co. prez Bill Rudin flank PR guru Howard, who was presented the Jack and Lewis Rudin Award for Industry Service to New York City for being a “strategist,mentor, mediator, and power broker” during the city's toughest times, not to mention the backbone in NYC's civic movement.
Since Matthew (right) became CUNY chancellor in '99, he's taken part in the education of more than a half million students. He's also making sure the next generation of scholars has modern facilities through a major capital program in 23 schools. And that only scratches the surface of Matthew's good works for CUNY, said NYBC chair and Tishman Construction president Peter Marchetto, who presented the award.
Douglas is quite the NYC pioneer, Daniel pointed out. As a third-generation leader of The Durst Org., he spurred the renaissance of Times Square with the catalytic building of 4 Times Square. He was also ahead of his time in sustainable development: 4 Times Square was one of the first spec office building to embody green design and building practices. Fast-forward to next Thursday, Durst's One Bryant Park, one of the greenest buildings in the world, will have its official grand opening .
