RACING WITH HEART

Vornado’s Pamela Caruso has taken her support of the St. Francis Food Pantries & Shelters to the road. In November, she’ll be pounding the pavement during the 26.2-mile ING New York City Marathon in honor of the charity. Her Run for Hunger team wants to raise $5,000donate here. Above, Pam crosses the finish line at last year’s Philadelphia Marathon. This is her fourth race—she ran New York in ’08 and ’09.
And tonight, CBRE retail SVP Eric Gelber starts a 155-mile solo ultra marathon called “The Catskill 155 - Journey for a Cure” to raise money for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. The consecutive run—the equivalent of six marathons—will begin in Oneonta, meander through the Catskill Mountains, and end in Suffern. He estimates it’ll take him between 36 and 40 hours to complete. Why MMRF? Family friend Anita Sorrell was diagnosed with the rare blood cancer in ‘03. After a stem cell transplant and treatment and clinical trials developed by MMRF funding, Anita is courageously living with this incurable disease. Eric has raised $60k since ’07, and in the past two years has run 10 ultra marathons—a 50k, a 60k, four 50-milers, and four 100-milers. Donate to MMRF through Eric here.
Last week, 100 cyclists (and two ATV'ers) biked 150 miles in the second annual Bike4Chai fundraiser, which raises money in support of Camp Simcha, a medically supervised overnight camp for seriously ill children. The riders—including Madison Commercial Real Estate Services director of operations Elliot Zaks—started Aug. 3 from The Berkeley Hotel in Asbury Park, NJ, and made their triumphant entry into Glen Spey, NY’s Camp Simcha on Aug. 4. The $530k raised will allow 80 children with cancer and other serious illnesses to attend the summer camp tuition free—enjoying traditional camp activities from archery and water play to special events such as helicopter rides and concerts.
