Citing a direct correlation between on-campus housing and academic success, UMass Boston president Marty Meehan announced the university expects to open student housing on its Boston campus in 2018.
The $120M, 1,000-bed residential complex will be built through a public-private partnership. The UMass Building Authority will contract with Capstone Development to lease a portion of the UMass Boston campus adjacent to the Clark Athletic Center for the community. While Capstone will develop the facility, it will be owned and operated by a nonprofit management group. UMass Boston will oversee all student life activities at the complex, which will open its doors to freshmen and transfer students in September 2018.
UMass has grown from 11,862 students in 2005 to 17,030 students, and the University is building the infrastructure needed to keep up with the enrollment boom. Last month, UMass Boston celebrated the grand opening of University Hall (above).
