DO SOME GOOD

Nearly 26 million Americans live with diabetes, making it one of the biggest health concerns in the US. The CRE community responded by raising more than $1.2M for cure-focused diabetes research last week at the annual Empire Ball, which honored Trinity Real Estate CEO Jason Pizer, Plaza Construction president Richard Wood, and Cushman & Wakefield executive managing director Frank Freda. ATCO Properties & Management COO Peter DiCapua and The Rizzo Group’s Charles Rizzo launched the annual fundraising event for the Diabetes Research Institute after Charles’ daughter was diagnosed with Type 1. Above: DRI and University of Miami cell transplant center director Dr. Camillo Ricordi, Richard, Jason, Frank, Peter, and NBC 4 newscaster and "The Debrief with David Ushery" host David Ushery, who was the special guest emcee. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Greater New York Chapter recently held its 9th Annual Breath of Life Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street, where it honored Turner Construction—a huge supporter of the Foundation—and Turner Construction VP Gary Negrycz (with wife Eileen), whose granddaughter has the disease. (Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease affecting the lungs and digestive system of nearly 30,000 people in the US.) Turner VPs Charles Avolio and Emad Lotfalla chaired the event. The gala raised $1.6M, senior development director Teresa Gaudio tells us, which will go to further the discovery and development of new drugs and make progress in the fight to end CF.
