Two New Jersey Dunkin' Donuts franchises have installed an aerobic digester by BioHitech America to meet sustainability goals and reduce the amount of coffee grounds and food waste heading from stores to the landfill. The on-site unit will eliminate up to 2,400 pounds of food waste in a 24-hour period by converting it into nutrient-neutral water and transporting that water safely via sewer, according to Waste 360.

Last year, Dunkin' Donuts launched a green building certification program, Green DD, to help franchisees build sustainable restaurants, setting a goal of building 100 certified locations by the end of 2016. To gain certification, the stores must meet five stages, including site development, store efficiency, healthy indoors, sustainable operations, and innovation and community.
