BOMA International’s education session, “Changing Times Call for Changing Measures” on Monday afternoon gave an overview of the proposed revisions to the BOMA Office Measurement Standard.

“Items like balconies and rooftop terraces may be included in rentable area,” David Fingret of Extreme Measures Inc. said.

Cushman & Wakefield’s Jenna Muller said changes in the 2017 standard aim to address new market realities, such as demand for outdoor spaces to attract millennial workers.

The BOMA 2017 Office Standard is scheduled to release in September, according to BOMA Floor Measurement Standards Committee chair Rebecca Hanner, BOMA Fellow, with Cushman & Wakefield. The changes will likely bring higher load factors, according to Gensler’s Mitchell Luehring.

“The BOMA Office Standard is becoming more granular with the changes in the 2017 edition,” Hokanson Cos. Chris Horsley said. “It reflects how we can classify and offer building amenities to remain competitive.”
