Target Spending $250M To Remodel 28 Twin Cities Stores In 2018

Target Corp. is planning to spend $250M to give 28 stores in the Twin Cities a thorough makeover, as part of a more than $1B effort to renovate 325 stores nationwide. The number of stores in Minneapolis-St. Paul getting the upgrades amounts to about half of Target's locations in its home market.

Some of the upgrades will involve the looks of the store. Among other things, there will be updated flooring, LED and other lighting, and more upbeat background music. Also, the stores will not be quite as red, with a more neutral color scheme added.

Like other major retailers, Target will start including a more prominent counter at which to pick up online orders. There will be a "trend spot" near entrances to showcase seasonal goods, as well as additional self-checkout lanes and new produce bins and grocery displays.

The remodeled Target stores will also feature nursing rooms. The company has been testing the concept for about a year, the better to cater to young families, the Star Tribune reports.

Target announced plans last year to spend about $7B over three years to not only revamp stores but also on upping its game in private-label apparel and home brands. Other plans call for opening more small-format urban stores and enhancing the Target website and supply chain.

The retail giant remodeled 110 of its stores in various parts of the country last year, including stores in St. Louis Park and St. Paul's Midway. Its goal for revamped stores is to lift sales by 2% to 4%.
