Shinola Makes It Out West

Chic Detroit retailer Shinola has opened its first West Coast outpost in Silver Lake. Now you have a place to buy a bicycle and a hand-crafted leather journal in the same place. Watches too.

The 1,100 SF spot on Sunset will carry all the retailers usual goods, including Detroit-built watches, bicycles, journals, leather goods, shoe polish and pet accessories. (Though if you train your dog to tell time, then a watch is a pet accessory.) CEO Steve Bock says Silver Lake is the ideal spot for his store, with its artsy vibe.

The retailer has been expanding rapidly, after starting in Detroit three years ago. Steve says the company also plans a new shop in Chicago’s Wicker Park area and its first store outside of the US in London’s Soho.

With an eye toward the crafty, Shinola built its watch and leather factories within the College for Creative Studies in the former Argonaut building. The retailer is owned by Bedrock Manufacturing. The store also just launched a European e-commerce site.
