It has been two years since a developer began preparing to build a South LA retail project that was billed as being able to transform Vermont Knolls, but the promises of the 200K SF shopping center have not come to fruition.
Sassony Properties tore down a former Payless ShoeSource at the site of 84th and Normandy, but not much else has been done, LA Weekly reports.
It was originally scheduled to be completed by the end of last year.
A Sassony Properties executive attributes the delays to a legal dispute with the agency that is the successor to the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency.
Community Coalition of South LA executive vice president Aurea Montes-Rodriguez said the developer was not serious about the shopping center development.
The project, known as the Vermont Entertainment Village, proposed upscale retailers, a grocery store, a performance plaza and a banquet hall, among other amenities.
