Long Beach officials plan to ask the California State Legislature to declare homelessness a "state of emergency."
The Long Beach City Council is scheduled to discuss the matter at its meeting today, sending a resolution to the state Legislature and Gov. Jerry Brown in support of improving resources to combat homelessness.
The number of homeless in Long Beach has increased in recent years, according to the Long Beach Press Telegram.
About 40% of the homeless population across California now lives in LA County.
Long Beach hopes to take advantage of a bill passed by state legislators last week that would provide a $2B bond to build and rehab permanent housing for the homeless and mentally ill. [LBPT]
