Birmingham’s first large-scale cycle hub, with spaces for up to 440 bikes, is to be created at Hermes’ 1.8M SF Paradise Birmingham.

The cycle hub will be in the basement of One Centenary Way, the first building to be built as part of the second phase of Paradise Birmingham. But eager cyclists will have to wait until the block’s completion, due in the first half of 2022.

The wait will be worth it, developer Hermes and development manager Argent said. An increase in cycling provision and use across the city needs to be supported with relevant infrastructure and the cycle hub is part of this, they said.

The team at Paradise Birmingham has now teamed up with Birmingham City Council and Transport for the West Midlands to try and gauge demand for the cycle hub and its services from cyclists themselves.

The hub will be open to any cyclists who travel into the city centre. Facilities could range from bike stands, lockers and showers to on-site staff and maintenance facilities.

“Cycle hubs have been successful in London and other British cities," Argent regional director Rob Groves said. "We fully understand many of the issues and challenges local cyclists face every day which is why we want to create something that helps get people onto their bikes and supports their choice of transportation.”

The Paradise redevelopment is being brought forward through Hermes Investment Management, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Birmingham City Council.
