| It's a good week for sea life. Phillips Seafood celebrated its Power Plant grand opening and also revealed that it'll open another location in another Cordish project: the Maryland Live casino in Anne Arundel. (That's good for whales.) |
| The Maryland Live version of Phillips (part of the casino's Live! Market) is likely to be a little more colorful than the original. The casino is expected to open this summer. The 400-seat Power Plant location opened for business on Nov. 11, and a 200-seat deck will open in the spring serving the steamed stuff from the menu. |
| Yesterday, Brown Craig Turner architect Bryce Turner (with colleague Janet Reynolds) told us dense, urban, stacked retail like Power Plant and the proposed Walmart at 25th Street Station is the hot ticket. The key is creating pedestrian flow with signage, aromas (how 'bout crab cakes?), storefronts, and restaurants. It keepscustomers moving through rather than dashing in and back out. That's also true for open-air centers like GGP and Kimco's Owings Mills Mall redevelopment that Bryce is also working on, especially since the urban amenities aren't already there. In such car-oriented shopping centers, anchor stores draw people in (Macy's and JCPenney's will remain at Owings Mills), and then Bryce's job is to thread together the other uses. |
| Also on the Brown Craig Turner agenda yesterday was its annual decorating party and worst sweater contest. Entries were Toni Onufrak, Deb Dietrich, Duncan Walker, Jennifer Geczi, Glen Tipton, Emily Reid, and Steve Marker. Duncan's hand-decorated blazer won him two VHS Christmas movies. Bryce recused himself from the contest but did engage in some reindeer games. He might just wear those when he speaks at Bisnow's Baltimore Retail Real Estate Summit on Monday, Dec. 12, along with Kimco Mid-Atlantic prez Tom Simmons.
