Anthem Headed To Bank Of America Plaza

Anthem BlueCross/BlueShield appears to be one of the first major new deals for Bank of America Plaza's new owners.

Permits filed with the City of Atlanta show that Anthem is looking to spruce up office space on three floors of the iconic 1.2M SF tower in an office requirement that is in addition to its current Buckhead operations at One Capital City Plaza.

The three floors so far filed with the city equate to roughly 75k SF. We previously reported that Anthem was searching for 125k SF in Midtown. It's unclear if the healthcare provider will lease any more at the Southeast's tallest tower. Officials with CBRE, who represent the landlord, declined to comment, and Savills Studley officials, who represent Anthem, could not be reached for comment either.

Anthem's spokesperson Geraldine Rodriguez say the firm is "still researching potential real estate opportunities," but also adds that "we have not signed a lease."

Anthem has targeted floors 16-18 for its operations, according to permits. And for Shorenstein—the owner of the tower—the firm could be one of potentially two new deals for the long-wallowing Bank of America Plaza, a poster child for the credit crunch of 2008 and the Great Recession.

As we previously reported here, Honeywell's $9.4B Home and Building Technologies business unit is eyeing the tower for its new 800-job operation, along with Carter's 715 Peachtree (which is widely believed to be the front-runner).

In February, the CDC Foundation inked a deal for some 30k SF at Bank of America Plaza, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. And law firm Troutman Sanders renewed and shrank its space there from 330k to 200k SF over the summer, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle.
