Bisnow Scoop: Midtown/Downtown Target For 150k SF Anthem Office

A Indianapolis-based health insurance provider is scouting the Midtown and Downtown Atlanta submarkets for a big block of office space in a new requirement for Atlanta.

Numerous Bisnow sources say that Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Georgia is in the hunt for up to 125k SF. While the reason for the expansion is unclear, sources say it has nothing to do with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia's current office space at One Capital City Plaza (here), and is a new requirement. At that square footage, given industry employee/per SF averages, that means Anthem could conceivably be adding some 500 jobs to the Metro Atlanta economy. Savills Studley is representing the deal, but officials are mum. And a spokesperson for Anthem tells us the company “regularly researches real estate opportunities to meet the current and potential future needs of our business.”

This Anthem deal comes on the heels of a couple of other real estate moves by the company in recent months. It's reportedly establishing a 6,400 SF innovation center for customer-service software products at Centergy in Midtown, according to this recent Atlanta Business Chronicle article. And late last year, Anthem secured a 40k SF lease at Ashford Green in Central Perimeter for IT operations, sources say, a new deal to that building.
