Report: CyrusOne Planning $200M+ Data Center In Metro Atlanta

An economic development prospect called Project Smart is set to be Atlanta's newest data center player in its burgeoning market.

Dallas-based CyrusOne is in talks to develop a more than $200M data center on 44 acres in Riverside West Business Park in Douglas County, near the home of Google's 2M SF server farm, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reports. An announcement of the project — called Project Smart in economic development circles — is expected by year's end, the paper said.

CyrusOne would be entering one of the fastest-growing data center markets in the country. Demand for data center space has jumped by 20% this year from last, fueled by demand by Fortune 500 companies to move IT operations from the Northeast and California to the Southeast, according to the ABC.

Atlanta also was one of the strongest markets in all the U.S. for data center absorption in 2016, The Data Center Journal reported.

CyrusOne would be the second-largest data center operator in the metro area if the deal comes to fruition, behind QTS' 1.4M SF facilities in Atlanta and Suwanee.
