Traffic plans that have been 15 years in the making are now impacting everything that comes out of the ground in Buckhead. That's why we're excited to host our Buckhead Renaissance event on Nov. 20 at the St. Regis Hotel, starting at 8am (good, you can sleep late, Atlanta).

Panelist and Buckhead CID executive director Jim Durrett (snapped biking waaaay outside Buckhead) says the goal is for a more walkable and less congested Buckhead core. To that end, the CID has already partnered with Georgia DOT in roadway and streetscape improvements along Peachtree Road to encourage more foot traffic, and built a pedestrian bridge spanning GA 400 from the Buckhead MARTA station to Stratford Road and Tower Place Drive.

Now comes a next phase of projects: the widening of the Piedmont Road corridor north of Lenox Road with a center turn lane. Jim says that's critical to improve traffic flow, especially during commute times, and maybe even to be able to reduce the need for traffic officers during peak PM hours. The CID also is continuing, with its partners, the PATH400 trail project, a bike/ped path that will ultimately connect to The Atlanta BeltLine at Peachtree Creek (something that excites Jim, an avid biker, even after a pretty serious injury two years ago). The CID also is working with GDOT to determine what can be done with Peachtree Road south of Maple Drive: Add bike lanes? Better pedestrian access? And most importantly: how to pay for it, he says.
