Sprouts Coming To Vacant Highland Park 99 Cents Only Store
A former 99 Cents Only Store in Los Angeles is set to give way to a new Sprouts grocery location.
A representative for Phoenix-based Sprouts Farmers Market confirmed the company signed a lease for a new store at 6235 York Blvd. in Highland Park and that the new store is scheduled to open in 2027. The representative didn't offer further details.
A demolition notice has been posted in the window of the store. This 99 Cents Only location, along with all of the retailer's roughly 370 others, closed in 2024 following the chain's Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Permits filed with the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety indicate a new, ground-up grocery store is planned for the site, but the size of the new store is unclear. The existing building is roughly 21K SF.
When 99 Cents Only Stores closed, the loss of its affordably priced groceries left a void in many neighborhoods.
"Unless a grocery store backfills the space, that'll present a challenge for the people that have grown accustomed to very popularly priced, value-oriented grocery items," JLL National Agency Retail Lead Chris Wilson told Bisnow in April 2024.
The arrival of a Sprouts will likely help to fill that gap.
The Highland Park location isn't the first Southern California 99 Cents Only Store that has been taken over by a Sprouts. Last summer, Sprouts signed a 26K SF lease for a Santa Ana space that previously housed a 99 Cents Only Store.
On its earnings call this week, Sprouts announced plans to open at least 40 new locations in 2026.
