For Healthcare Facilities, Extensive Pre-Construction Means Better Facilities And Better Care

For construction companies, healthcare facilities present unique challenges. Hospitals and medical office buildings have complex infrastructure needs and require special materials and technology. Toughest of all, sections of these facilities have to remain open and treat patients while renovations are underway.

Because medical work is so constrained and complex, construction companies are investing in technology and pre-construction techniques to speed the process along. Careful planning and speedy execution can be the difference between a hospital delivered on time and a surprise that sets work back for months.

“We’re used to tight timelines on schools and office buildings, but healthcare facilities present our biggest challenge,” Truebeck Project Executive Dan Amigone said. “The prep work that goes into a healthcare project is immense. We’re using the most up-to-date tech software and pre-planning every move we make.”

At El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, California, Truebeck is in the midst of remodeling the three-floor women’s hospital, including prenatal and neonatal care units as well as the entire emergency department.

Amigone said he is bringing to bear all the technology and planning expertise that Truebeck has for the project. When construction begins, 3D scanners and mapped cameras will track progress and watch out for conflicts and hazards, but much of the work has now been completed long before construction begins.

“Our pre-construction team determined they could save the client $15M and a year’s worth of work if they flipped the NICU to the second floor and remodeled a few of the areas they were planning to gut completely,” Amigone said. “That kind of out-of-the-box thinking can save serious money, which hospitals can use to make sure their patients get the best care.”

Amigone said that $15M is just the beginning in terms of the savings that proper planning and technology can provide. Scroll through the interactive map to see the pre-construction and technology work that goes into Truebeck’s healthcare projects.
